Rachel Beede ‘Spirit of Washington’ Award

On November 12, 2008, the historical society presented the first annual Spirit of Washington Award in memory of Rachel Beede, a lifelong town resident who passed away in 2008.

Rachel was instrumental in providing much valuable historical information to the society, as well as to anyone who asked.

Not only was this award being presented to Rachel’s family in her memory, but it will also be forever known as the Rachel Beede Spirit of Washington Award.

This award was given to the family of Paul Vermette. Paul not only was a valued town resident, he spearheaded the building of the new school after the old one burned on March 13, 1959. It was only fitting that he be honored for his selflessness in donating his valuable construction time and expertise, as well as gathering other townsfolks to help, in order to save our town over $35,000 in building costs.
